Midday on the Key is the first completed movement of my upcoming work Three Pieces for solo piano. Bearing two titles—one poetic and one functional—it evokes the world of DeSoto Key, a favorite spot of my partner Alyssa and I. Functionally, the piece is built completely from pitches derived from a sequence of progressively augmenting or diminishing intervals. Alternating sections of improvisatory melodic intervals and melodies built from the same lend the piece its structure.
